Ephs split doubleheader with Gustavus Adolphus

PHOENIX, AZ. -- Junior left-hander Ben Horwitz hurled a complete-game six-hitter Monday to help the Williams College baseball team to a 9-2, 0-6 doubleheader split with Gustavus Adolphus College at South Mountain Community College.
Williams is now 8-2 overall. The are scheduled to play a doubleheader with the University of Southern Maine Tuesday beginning at 12 p.m. MST.
Horwitz gave up two runs in the second inning Monday, then shut out the Gusties over the final five frames. His teammates snapped a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the third and broke it open with a four-run fifth.
In the third, Robin Allemand drew a lead-off walk. After an out, Max Pinto scored him with an RBI-double. Chad Brown followed with an RBI-double for a 4-2 lead. In the Ephs' fifth, first-year Pat Barren smacked an RBI-double and Taylor Mikell had an RBI-single.
Pinto finished the game 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Mikell was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Trey Pendrey went 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Horwitz allowed six hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out two.
In the nightcap, the Ephs were shutout by Gustie freshman Cody Sukalski, who allowed just five hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out five.
Williams senior James DiCosmo had two of the five Williams hits, finishing 2 for 3.
Eph senior Matt Gustafson started and took the loss, allowing seven hits and one walk over five frames while striking out three. He was charged with five runs, three earned. First-year Tom Hester threw one inning, allowing an unearned run on one hit while fanning one.
