Ephs come up short in 8-7 loss to Elmhurst

CHANDLER, AZ. -- A ninth-inning rally fell one-run short
Wednesday as the Williams College baseball team dropped an 8-7
decision to Elmhurst (Ill.) at Snedigar Park.
The Ephs fell to 9-4 heading into the first of a three-game
set with conference rival Middlebury Friday at 1:30 PM MST.
A four-run fourth inning put Elmhurst up 5-2 and drove Eph
starter Brett DeWare from the game. The Ephs responded with a run
in the fifth and three in the sixth that put them in the lead at
6-5.
First-year Pat Barren led off the Williams sixth with a walk.
Ryan Webster also drew a free pass. Both moved up on a groundout,
and Bryce Bennett scored Barren when he beat out an infield single.
Barrett Allison followed with an RBI-single and Robin Allemand
snapped a 5-5 tie with an RBI-single that scored Bennett with the
tie-breaking run.
Elmhurst countered with two in the top of the eighth and one
on the ninth to build an 8-6 lead. Williams attempted a comeback in
its half of the ninth when, with one out, Chad Brown laced a
pinch-hit single and advanced to third on back-to-back wild
pitches. Max Pinto drew a walk and junior Zach Stone scored Brown
with a sacrifice fly. That brought up Barren, who lined a frozen
rop to right directly at the Elmhurst fielder for the final
out.
Allemand went 3 for 5 for the Ephs while Pinto was 1 for 4
with two RBI.
DeWare went 3 2/3 innings for the Ephs , allowing five hits
and four runs, two earned, and three walks. Dan Marcet relieved and
went 4 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and three runs, one
earned, while walking no one and striking out two. Tom Coleman
allowed one unearned run in the ninth.
