WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—Williams (4-2) field hockey was victorious Wednesday night, taking down Springfield (4-4) 4-0.
The first half was marked by strong passing and field awareness by the Ephs. Williams was aggressive throughout the first half, getting off 13 shots against Springfield goalie Tamarie Villa. Consecutive strong scoring attempts led to a goal by Williams' Emily Pavlini (Far Hills, NJ) off an assist by Casey Greene (Greenwich, CT) at 23:26. The highlight of the half for the Ephs was an unassisted goal by senior Katie Pettengill (South Hadley, MA) with 9:38 left in the half. Pettengill was just one example of the strong play by the Williams bench throughout the game.
Springfield worked hard to match the Ephs in aggression on offense, challenging Williams goalie Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, MD). Spiliotes led the Williams defense from the cage, stopping 6 Springfield shots in the first half.
The Eph defense came out strong in the second half, keeping the ball away from their side of the field. This strong play extended to the offense leading to two more goals by the Ephs. Sophomore Cary Hairfield (Richmond, VA) scored, unassisted, at 29:22. Haley Ladd-Luthringshauser (Boxborough, MA) tallied the final goal for Williams off an assist by Caitlin Conlon (Sudbury, MA) at 13:07.
Coach Alix Barrale was impressed with Springfield's aggression throughout the game and specifically in the first half, noting that the Ephs "had to come up with some big saves on defense". Barrale was pleased with her team's ability to make adjustments between halves, adding, "The team came together in their passing and decision making in the second half and the play by the women coming off the bench infused great energy into the team".
