WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—Williams Field Hockey (5-7) fell to the Tufts University Jumbos (10-1) on Saturday, 1-0.
The game was scoreless through the first half, however the Ephs appeared to have the advantage in the game. Williams held the Jumbos to zero shots on goal in the half and led Tufts 3-1 on penalty corners. The Ephs got off six shots against Tufts goalie Brianne Keenan before halftime.
Tufts came out strong in the second half, challenging the Williams defense for all 35:00, leading the Ephs 8-2 in penalty corners. The Jumbos fired off 12 shots against the Ephs in the second half. Eph goalie Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, MD) came up with great stops in the half and seemed to have an answer to each attempt by Tufts. The relentless play by the Jumbos paid off with 8:57 left in the game when Rachel Gerhardt netted the game winner off a penalty corner.
Williams Coach Alix Barrale noted that she "likes playing teams like Tufts. They make us better". Tufts came into this game with only one loss coming to undefeated Middlebury. "Despite having to make big adjustments in the second half, we played a very poised and intense game for the full 70 minutes" added Barrale.
