The USTA/ITA New England Regional Tournament Concludes Final Day

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA––The USTA/ITA New England Regional Tennis Championship concluded its third and final day of play.

Both singles semi-finals matches were intra-squad matches. No. 1 Felix Sun (Williams) fell to teammate Matt Micheli, while Amherst's Joey Fritz, ranked sixth in the tournament, beat fellow Lord Jeff Chris Dale. Micheli beat Sun, who won the tournament last year, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Fritz and Dale had a grueling three set match, with Fritz eventually winning 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (2).

In the singles championship Fritz dropped the first set to Micheli, but bounded back to win the next two sets 6-0, 6-4 to claim the title.

The No. 1 seeded doubles pair Jones/Leibovitz (Middlebury) beat Amherst's Schelner/Dale to advance to the semi-finals, where they fell 8-2 to Meyer/Chow (Williams). Meyer/Chow defeated Bettles/Berg (Bates) to advance to the semi-finals. Parrower/Angle (Middlebury) and Sun/Micheli (Williams) also beat their opponents to advance to the final four. Parrower/Angle beat Colby's Carroll/Bryant and Sun/Micheli defeated Brandeis' Siegel/Bliefield.

Head Coach Dan Greenberg was "thrilled" that "our guys did so well. They had great energy throughout the weekend, and even though it's technically an individual tournament, they created
a team atmosphere that helped them get some big wins."

The finals came down to a battle between Williams teammates Sun/Micheli and Meyer/Chow. Meyer and Chow beat their fellow Ephs 8-4 to win the doubles crown and earn All-American honors.

Greenberg concluded saying "Overall, it was a very strong field; it was nice to host all the great tennis here."
