Ephs race at Dartmouth Indoor Classic

The Williams Track & Field team headed north to Hanover, New Hampshire, on Saturday to compete in the 2008 Dartmouth Indoor Classic, which served as a tune up for the larger championship meets in the coming weeks. Though team scoring was not kept at the meet, the men’s team had a strong showing, with solid performances all around.

The middle distance squad had a strong showing, led by Junior Macklin Chaffee in the 1000 meter run. After waiting on the leader’s shoulder for much of the race, Chaffee went on to win in a time of 2:29.23, a time that puts him near the top of the Williams all-time list.  After the race, Chaffee held reservations about his strategy, but ended up satisfied with the victory.

“I felt kind of wimpy,” Chaffee said, “just sitting on the leader and out-kicking him at the end. It was a good race though, and it’s always good to win.”

Chaffee also anchored the winning 4x800 meter relay, which finished in a time of 8:00.04.

The Ephmen also took home wins in some of the shorter events, including senior Chris Beeler’s win in the open 800 meter dash with a time of 1:57.36, and first year Taylor Fitzgerald’s victory in the 500 meter dash (1:07.25). Nick Reynolds finished second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.66 seconds.

In the mile, Morgan Seybert narrowly missed a victory in the 1 mile run. After taking the lead early in the race – at one point stretching it to nearly 10 meters – his early effort got the best of him, as he got outkicked down the final straightaway. He finished second with a time of 4:24.64.

Off the track and into the field, sophomore John Dingee jumped 13.74 meters to claim second in the triple jump, and senior Andrew DeSalvo finished third place in the shot put with a throw of 14.53 meters.

After the meet, senior captain Mack Brickley expressed satisfaction: “I think our guys did really well today, and I think we’re right where we want to be going into the championship season.”
