SOUTH HADLEY, MA --
The Williams College women’s golf team finished out day one of the Mount Holyoke tournament at the historic Western Massachusetts golf club, The Orchards, fourth out of 14 teams. Well known for its level of difficulty, The Orchards was home to the US Women’s Open in 2004 and today, The Orchards hosted the Ephs.

Williams is 10 shots behind first day leader St. Lawrence (322).

Despite various obstacles early on in the day, the Eph finished the day with a 332 total score, in fourth place out of 14 teams. Among these initial setbacks was this morning’s frost delay, which caused the Ephs to tee off about 45 minutes late. In addition to the early morning frost, the recently aerified course made the greens exceedingly harder to putt on.

Anne O’Leary shot an 80 while senior Mary Gelber shot an 83 from the number two spot. O'Leary's 80 (41-39) places her in a tie for fifth place overall. Coach Erika DeSanty commented on Gelber’s performance saying, “Mary lost two balls on the first hole. She had to fight back over the next 17 holes. This is never easy but it shows a lot about her. For Mary to finish with an 83 after that kind of hurdle in the beginning is no small feat,”.

Kristen Tubbs finished with an 84 while Victoria Student, freshman, shot an 85. Becky Miller, also a freshman, shot a 90 overall in her first tournament appearance.

Coach DeSanty, in regards to tomorrow, remarked on the course, “Putting was exceptionally difficult today due to the recent course work. We’re going to have to practice some more to get used to the roll, but tomorrow the girls will be more familiar with the greens and things should play out a little smoother.” She then went on to say that she is confident that both Gelber and Tubbs can perform better and despite giving away a few shots, she believes that the Ephs are in a good position for tomorrow.

Weather providing, the Ephs tee off tomorrow morning at 8:10 am in the final round of the two-day competition.
