Ephs Remain 5th in New England; Freshman Jorge Lopez Named NEWA Rookie of the Week

Scott Honecker's Williams College wrestling team improved to 6-5 on the year by going 4-2 at the Budd Whitehill National Duals at Lycoming College over the weekend and have remained ranked 5th in New England.

Freshman standout Jorge Lopez was named the NEWA Rookie of the Week for going 6-0 over the weekend and coach Honecker is expecting Lopez to be ranked nationally at 149.

CO-NEWA Wrestlers of Week:

Howard Tobochnik, 149, Wesleyan, SR. Tobochnik went 5-0 on the weekend at the NWCA National Duals and helped lead Wesleyan University to a 6th place finish. Tobochnik won by Major Decision over Einerson of UW-Lacrosse and Spangler of Elmhurst. He also beat Gage Pederson of Olivet ranked #7 nationally by NWCA / #2 by d3wrestle by a score of 9-3. Tobochnik also had a pin against JWU and won a 7-6 decision over Collins of Ithaca.

Everet Desilets, 157, JWU, FR. Everet went (5-0) at the NWCA National Duals this weekend to up his season mark to 19-3. Everet who is unranked in the NWCA Coaches poll and an Honorable mention in the D3 poll showed why he should be considered for a ranking. Everet started his tournament off with a SV2 win over 2x All-American Sterling (Cortland) currently ranked #5 in Both Polls. He went on to defeat Warcynski (Dubuque) Ranked #6 in the NWCA Poll and a 3X NQ by a 17-3 score. Then rounded out the day with a Pin in: 30 against Knutsen (Augsburg) helping the Wildcats to a first time win over the 11x National Champions Augsburg. The following day he scored 2 more wins by majors defeating Boyer (COE) 13-3 who is a Contender on the D3wrestle Poll.

Tobochnik and Desilets are the only two wrestlers in NEWA history to go 5-0 at the NWCA National Duals and it was the only time in the conference's history that two teams placed in the top 8 with Wesleyan taking 6th and Johnson and Wales taking 8th place respectively.

NEWA Rookie Wrestler of the Week:
Jorge Lopez, 149, Williams, FR. Lopez was 6-0 on the weekend helping Williams to a 7th place team finish at the Lycoming Duals. Lopez pinned Dan Mirman of John Carroll ranked #5 in the country in 4:52 after being up 6-3 in the match. He followed that match with with 5 more wins including 2 pins and a major decision. Lopez won the Scott Viera Invitational last weekend and was a runner up at the Doug Parker tournament in his first tournament of the year, where he beat then nationally ranked Henry Stauber of Johns Hopkins a returning national qualifier.

Williams College went to the Lycoming Duals and went 4-2 on the way to their 7th place finish. Ces Antista at 141 and NEWA Rookie Lopez at 149 were both 6-0. Tom Foote at 285 went 5-0 and freshman Tim Garripoli went 5-1. The Ephs ended up beating Waynesburg, Heidelberg (7th seed), John Carroll (8th seed), and Case Western on the weekend.
