Williams represented in both singles Semi-Finals and doubles Finals of ITAs

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The second day of the ITA Championships concluded today seeing the elimination of three out of four Williams singles players in the Quarter-Finals.  Rebecca Curran remains the lone Eph left in the singles Championship, moving on to face 6th seed Ria Gerger (Middlebury) in the Semis. The doubles pair of Curran/Shoemaker has also advanced to the Semi-Finals.

In the singles Quarter Finals, both Nancy Worley and Kara Shoemaker were up against seeded opponents.  Worley was defeated by No. 5 Jordan Brewer (Amherst) 6-2, 6-4.  Kara Shoemaker, herself a number 2 seed, lost to 6th seed Ria Gerger 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.  The two other Ephs left in the competition, Rebecca Curran and Kate Pollan were pitted against each other.  Both un-seeded competitors, Coach Alison Swain was “particularly excited” that both advanced so far.  Although surely a tough match-up mentally, this guaranteed that at least one Williams player would make an appearance in the Semi-Finals.  Ultimately, Curran claimed the spot, winning a lengthy 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 match.

Coach Swain remarked how “having four players in the round of 16 is a true testament to the depth of our squad this year.  All four of them advancing to the quarters really displayed mental toughness and solid, aggressive play…We are looking forward to cheering Rebecca on tomorrow in her semi-final match.”

In doubles, Curran/Shoemaker continued their winning ways, defeating Broderick/Cooke, the 5th ranked team from Brandeis, 8-3 to move on to the Semis. They then dispatched the Brandeis pair of Gerger/Kepping 8-5, advancing to the Finals.
