
SOUTH HADLEY, MA – As the second day of NEWITTs came to a close, one Williams pair advanced to the Semis, while two others finished the day strong with wins in consolation matches.
In the round of 16, Williams 1 pair of Maria Pylypiv and Riqui McCoy defeated Tufts 1 team of Katz/Bowman 2-0. The team won both singles matches, and the final doubles match was defaulted due to injury. Williams Pastor/Stone lost to Richman/Aly (Amherst) 3-0. Both were hard fought singles matches against Amherst’s top players. Pastor lost to Amherst #3 player 6-4, 7-5; Stone lost in a marathon match of 6-4, 6-7 (5), 13-11. The Worley/Worley Tufts/Williams combo team was also beaten in the round of 16 to Amherst 4.
Pylypiv and McCoy advanced to the Quarterfinals against the #2 seed Trinity pairing of Ferjanic/Hoyt. They swept the match 3-0; 8-4 in doubles, then Pylypiv defeating Ferjanic 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 and McCoy defeating Hoyt 6-2, 6-2. They move on to face #3 seeded Amherst 2 tomorrow morning at 9am in the Semi-finals.
Coach Alison Swain remarked, “Maria and Riqui played some of their best tennis today in their quarterfinal match. The Trinity 1 team is very strong, and Maria and Riqui both stepped up their games, competed with a lot of energy and a positive attitude in their doubles and singles matches.”
