Ephs conclude first day of NEWITTs

SOUTH HADLEY, MA – The New England Women’s Intercollegiate (NEWITT) tennis tournament, held at Mount Holyoke, kicked off today and will conclude on Oct. 14.  Three out of four Williams teams advanced to the next round in this last event of the fall. 

NEWITTs is an unsanctioned tournament and will not count for ranking by the governing organization.  Each round consists of two singles matches and one doubles match for each pair.  The team that wins 2 out of 3 matches moves on in the draw.  Singles matches will play a Deciding Match Tie-Break (first to 10) in lieu of a third set.  Doubles matches will be an 8 game pro-set, tie-break at 8 games all. 

In the round of 32 played today, three Williams teams advanced.  Williams 1 (Pylypiv/McCoy) defeated Amherst 5 (sung/Pohl) 2-1.  Despite losing their doubles match 9-8 (4), both Pylypiv and McCoy pulled out a victory in Singles, 7-6 (4), 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2 respectively.  Williams 3, team of Pastor and Stone defeated Roger Williams 1 3-0.  On Monica Pastor’s birthday, her team won both Singles matches and the Doubles match.  Williams/Tufts combo team defeated Trinity 2 2-1.  Nancy Worley won her singles match, as did her Tufts teammate for the weekend – and sister –Catherine Worley, yet they lost their doubles match.  Williams 2 (Li/Hart) was defeated by #1 seed from Middlebury (Gerger/Kepping) 2-1.  Williams won their Doubles match 8-3, but lost both singles matches.

Tomorrow the Round of 16 and the Quarterfinals will be played.  Williams teams will be facing off against two teams from rival Amherst, and Tufts.  Complete results and schedule can be found here.
