Ephs dominate throws and jumps at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- The women's track and field team competed at MIT on Saturday, February 11th. A few women, including Maya Harakawa '12 and Ashley Graves '15, competed in open events at the Valentine Invitational on February 10th and then travelled to MIT for the 4x400m. This weekend of meets was the last chance for the team to turn-up and hit last minute qualifiers before Division III New Englands next weekend at Smith College.

In the field, Julie Paschal '13 placed second in the high jump after clearing a height of 1.57m. Jenna Adams dominated the competition in the pole vault with her first place jump of 3.65m. The duo of Hoffler and Brooke Johnson '13 placed first and second in the both the long and triple jumps respectively. Both had new season bests in the triple jump, with Hoffler's mark of 11.77 just missing the NCAA automatic qualifier of 11.82. Currently, Hoffler is ranked 5th nationally in the triple jump with Johnson ranked 36th and teammate Karyn Moss '12 ranked 31st.

In the throws, Williams placed 1-2 in both the weight throw and the shot put. Amina Avril's '14 mark of 12.24 was a new season best and Eileen Becker '12 was close behind with a throw of 12.13m. Avril also won the weight throw with a mark of 16.71m and Kathryn Evans '12 placed second with a throw of 14.76m.

In the 55m dash at MIT, Haley Stewart '15, Hillary Higgs '12, and Tanasia Hoffler '13 took places three through five, respectively. Hoffler and Stewart also competed in the 200m, taking first and second place. The Williams sprint team of Harakawa, Graves, Rebecca Fine '13, and Dianna Mejia '15 ran the 4x400m in a time of 4:07.80 for first place without any close competition.

New weekend is one of the most important meets for the Ephs, as they will compete against similar sized schools in the New England area. The team will be in full strength for the first time this winter as everyone will be competing at the same meet.
