Fall Highlights from 10, 25, and 50 Years Ago (Fall 2020)

Do you remember when…? Take a look back at a few highlights from The Williams Record of past fall Eph teams from 10 (2010), 25 (1995), and 50 (1970) years ago.

10 Years Ago (Fall 2010)

  • Women’s Tennis – Women’s Tennis Shines at 1st Williams Invitational – September 15th, 2010 – “Women’s tennis kicked off its fall season last weekend, hosting the first ever Williams Invitational Tournament. The women were joined by Middlebury, Vassar and Skidmore. The tournament is designed not to have elimination rounds so that each player gets as much participation time as possible, competing in four rounds of singles play, and three rounds of doubles play. Due to the nature of its organization, there was no tournament champion at the end of Sunday’s play. However, Williams earned the most wins overall, going 21-1 in singles and 9-1 in doubles play on Saturday and 21-0 in singles and 1-2 in doubles Sunday.” Continue reading here.
    Lucy Marchese ’11 competed in NCAAs in May and returns for her final year on the team.
  • Men’s Tennis – Men’s Tennis Drops MIT in Season Finale – October 20th, 2010 – “Men’s tennis rounded out its fall season with a 7-2 win over MIT Oct. 9, ending the three-weekend season on a high note. The team’s performance was followed by a strong showing by Felix Sun ’13 at the ITA Nationals this weekend, where the Ephs placed second overall.” Continue reading here.
  • Women’s Golf – Women’s Golf Earns 2 Tournament Titles – October 20th, 2010 – “The past two weekends were successful and rewarding for women’s golf. The women claimed both the team and individual wins at the Wellesley College Invitational this weekend after coming off a win at their home tournament, the Williams Fall Invitational, over the weekend of Oct. 9.” Continue reading here.
  • Women’s Crew – Women’s Crew Breaks Charles Record – October 27th, 2010 – “Women’s crew wore its purple with pride and poise this weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. After top-three finishes in previous seasons, the Ephs came out gunning for gold this year – and gold is exactly what they got, as the IV boat set a new course record with its first-place finish.” Continue reading here.
    The 1V rowed to a commanding first-place finish, shattering the course record by 23 seconds in its Head of the Charles win.

     

  • Men’s Crew – Men’s Crew Shows Team’s Depth at Head of the Fish – November 3rd, 2010 – “Men’s crew posted solid results in the varsity eights, varsity fours, novice eights and novice fours events at the Head of the Fish in Saratoga, N.Y. on Saturday. The strongest varsity crew was the “B” boat in both events, racing to fourth in the eights and event and second in the fourths.” Continue reading here.
  • Women’s Soccer – Women’s Soccer Cinches NESCAC Title – November 10th, 2010 – “Women’s soccer (12-3-2, 5-2-2 in the NESCAC) dropped archrival Amherst 1-0 to claim the team’s fourth straight and fifth overall NESCAC title after overcoming Middlebury 2-0 on Friday in the NESCAC semifinals. Saturday’s defeat of Amherst was particularly exciting because the women had fallen 1-0 to Amherst during regular season play. A late goal by tri-captain and NESCAC Player of the Week Sara Wild ’11 upset the NESCAC No. 2 Jeffs to win the game for her team.” Continue reading here.

  • Football – Football Claims Perfect Season – November 17th, 2010 – “‘The Biggest Little Game in America’ lived up to its moniker this weekend as football (8-0) accomplished a laundry list of feats on its way to beating Amherst 31-16. With the win, Williams finished its season undefeated, claimed sole possession of the 2010 NESCAC championship and avenged last year’s heartbreaking Homecoming loss to the Jeffs. Head Coach Aaron Kelton became the first Eph coach to go undefeated in his rookie season. This year’s team is only the seventh in school history to go undefeated and the first since 2006.” Continue reading here.
    On Saturday, football defeated Amherst 31-16, capturing the NESCAC title in the last game of the season. The win capped the team’s first undefeated season under a rookie coach. For full game coverage, see page 12.

     

25 Years Ago (Fall 1995)

  • Field Hockey – Field Hockey Squad Achieves Regular Season Perfection – October 31st, 1995 – “The women’s field hockey team closed out its regular season Saturday at Cole Field in what is becoming a traditional fashion. That is to say, against Connecticut College in an overtime game, and most importantly, one that ended with a Williams victory. The victory over the Camels, coupled with a Wednesday win at Springfield College, gives the squad its first perfect season since field hockey became a varsity sport in 1972.” Continue reading here.
    Kasia Sullivan ’96 scored the game-winner against Connecticut College.

     

  • Volleyball – Ephs Retain NESCAC Title – November 7th, 1995 – “For the Williams volleyball team. Saturday’s NESCAC tournament marked the apex of a regular season to remember. Exhibiting what head coach Pat Manning called a”a total team effort,” Williams stormed through its competition, defeating Colby College 15-2, 15-8 in the championship match. The title highlighted a brilliant regular season for the Ephs (32-2), as they establish school records for both total victories and winning percentages, while capturing their second straight NESCAC crown.” Continue reading here.
    First team all-NESCAC selection Kate Cardoza ’97 puts the ball in play. Cardoza helped the Ephs to a second straight NESCAC volleyball title this past weekend at Connecticut College.

     

  • Women’s Cross-CountryCaley Takes First, Ephs Eighth at Nationals – November 21st, 1995 – “Heading into the NCAA Division III national meet, Eph sophomore standout Jess Caley had not lost a single race all season. After the national meet, Caley’s streak was still intact as she cruised to a 13-second victory.” Continue reading here.
    Sophomore Jess Caley continued her winning streak at the national meet with a 13-second victory. Caley, who did not lose a race all season, led Williams to an eight-place finish at the meet.
  • Men’s Soccer – Ephs Capture NCAA Soccer Crown – November 21st, 1995 – “Not even a Hollywood screenwriter could have scripted it better. You lose a tri-captain in the preseason to leukemia, dedicate the season to him, go through the regular season undefeated, roll through the early rounds of the NCAA Division III tournament, get your moment of high drama in a semifinal shootout victory, set up a title game pitting the top two teams in the land and finally win the national championship in front of a frenzied hometown crowd. That’s exactly how the 1995 men’s soccer team’s season will go down in history to be remembered for years to come.” Continue reading here.
    The members of the men’s soccer team are all smiles as they celebrate with the championship trophy after defeating Methodist College 2-1 in the NCAA Division III title game Sunday at Cole Field. Brad Murray ’97 and Jason Horowitz ’98 scored the goals for the Ephs in the victory over the Monarchs. Williams advanced to the tournament final with an eight-round shootout victory over Muhlenberg College in Saturday’s semifinal.

     

50 Years Ago (Fall 1970)

  • Men’s Cross-Country – As Farwell Breaks Record, Cross Country Downs Middies – October 13th, 1970 – “Peter Farwell, the miraculous 5’3″, 100lb., Eph sophomore roadrunner from Northbrook, Illinois, set a new course record of 19:16.7 and led the Williams cross country team to a 23-34 win over Middlebury last Saturday in the Eph’s first outing. Farwell devastated the old 3 and three-quarter mile home course record of 19:35.4 set last year by Leaned of the University of Vermont. Gary Johnson of Middlebury, leading most of the way after a fast start, placed second in 19:17.3, as Farwell pulled out ahead in the last 100 yards, and Joe McNaulty paced in third place in 19:45 for the Panthers.” Continue reading here.

  • Men’s Golf – Sutter Takes Golf Title – November 13th, 1970 – “John Sutter ’74 grabbed an early lead and coasted to a 6 and 5 victory over Rob Peterson ’73 in the finals of the College Golf Championship, a tournament in which upsets were the rule rather than the exception. medalist Paul Lieberman ’71, captain of the varsity golf team, and Mark Udall, the defending champion, were both upended in first round play.” Continue reading here.
  • Men’s Soccer – Frosh Soccer Undefeated 5-0-1 – November 20th, 1970 – “With an 8-1 bombardment of Amherst last Saturday, the freshman soccer team completed its season in possession of a 5-0-1 record, the only blemish being a 2-2 tie with Dartmouth. The last time a squad of frosh booters went through a season undefeated was when the 1953 Little Purple won all of its four games.” Continue reading here.
