10 Years Ago (Fall 2014)

The 1V battled to a seventh place finish at the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta last Saturday in Boston, Mass.

Men’s cross country tosses the storied T Bear in the air before a meet, a tradition for good luck.
  • Cross Country (Men’s): Bear witness: The infamous legend of the T Bear (Oct 29, 2014) – “The Bear, familiarly known as T Bear, has been a member of the men’s cross country team since 1978, when a first-year on the team won a raffle after competing in a local race.” Continue reading here.

Field Hockey 2014
Caitlin Conlon ’15 recorded five shots and an assist in the women’s 3-1 over Bates last weekend.

Steven Kiesel ’15 had five catches for 62 yards in the Ephs’ 21-14 victory over the Continentals last Saturday.
  • Football: Ephs top Continentals 21-14, end four-game skid (Oct 29, 2014) – “Football (2-4) scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters, amassing a 21-point lead to overcome Hamilton last Saturday.” Continue reading here.
  • Golf (Women’s): Women’s golf captures first at Wellesley Invite (Oct 22, 2014) – “Women’s golf took first place last weekend at the Wellesley Invitational. This is the team’s fourth straight first-place tournament win.” Continue reading here.
M Soccer 2014
Men’s soccer Head Coach Mike Russo retires with a career 438-116-60 record.
  • Soccer (Men’s): Final farewell: Coach Mike Russo (Nov 5, 2014) – “Last Saturday, legendary men’s soccer Head Coach Mike Russo walked off of the pitch at Cole Field one final time as his final campaign at the helm of the Ephs came to a close. ‘I am older than some of the buildings here,’ Russo joked, who began his coaching career at Williams in 1979.” Continue reading here.
W Soccer 2014
Kristi Kirshe ’17 totaled five shots for the Ephs in their 1-0 victory over the Mules in the NESCAC quarterfinals last Saturday.
  • Soccer (Women’s): Ephs upend Mules with PK, advance to semifinals (Nov 5, 2014) – “Last Saturday, Cole Field once again proved impenetrable to visiting teams, as women’s soccr (15-1, 9-1 in the NESCAC) battled its way through a tense NESCAC quarterfinal match-up with Colby.” Continue reading here.
Volleyball 2014
Volleyball defeated Tufts in the NESCAC Championship match last Sunday 3-2 to clinch the women’s second-straight title.
  • Volleyball: Ephs tobble Jumbos, clinch NESCAC Championship (Nov 12, 2014) – “Volleyball (25-4, 8-2 in the NESCAC) continued its conference dominance, clinching its second-in-a-row NESCAC Championship title – its 11th overall – by defeating Tufts in the finals last Sunday 3-2.” Continue reading here.

  • Cross Country (Men’s): Williams reigns in Little Three: Harriers stride to victory (Nov 21, 1974) – “Finishing up with a band, the class of ’75 led the way as Williams captured its fifth straight Little Three cross country championship.” Continue reading here.

Field Hockey 1974
Edith Thurber eludes two R.P.I. defenders in action Saturday on Cle Field. The J.V. rolled over the Engineers, 5-0 to run their record to 4-0-1.

Football 1974
Scott Perry [42] and Emmett Creahan [68] storm Amherst punter George Ellis in Saturday’s action at Pratt Field. Ellis somehow managed to get the kick away.
  • Football: Ephmen smother Lord Jeffs, march on to four in a row (Nov 21, 1974) – “It wasn’t close. As darkness settled in on Pratt Field last Saturday, the scoreboard read Williams 17, Amherst 14, but a disappointed Amherst alumnus may have said it all when he grumbled, ‘They kicked our butts all over the field.'” Continue reading here.
Football 1974 vs. Amherst
1967: The Weston Field scoreboard clock tells the story as Jack Maitland, his uniform obliterated by mud and rain, hauls in a screen pass from quarterback Charlie Bradbury. Moments later, Maitland broke away from the two Amherst defenders pictured and raced 25 yards for the winning score.
