Do you remember when…? Take a look back at a few headlines from The Williams Record of past winter Eph teams from 10 (2007), 25 (1992), and 50 (1967) years ago.

10 YEARS AGO … (2007)

  • “Women’s track wins NCAA title”
“Women’s track and field came through with a host of sensational performances at the NCAA championships on March 12 to catapult the team to its first-ever national championship. The women earned 42 points to best the 35 points accumulated by runner-up City College of New York. The Ephs scored points in every event that they entered, enabling Williams’ eight-woman contingent to take the title.”
  • “Men’s swimming places 4th at NCAAs”
“After dominating the NESCAC championships in February, eleven swimmers concluded their season with the NCAA Div. III championship held in Houston, Tex. En route to a fourth place finish, the Ephs broke seven conference and school records, while 10 swimmers gained All-American honors and one earned an individual championship. As a whole, the team tallied the most points ever recorded by Williams.”
  • “Women’s squash grabs Little Three title with two easy wins over rivals”
“Women’s squash played its final two home matches of the season on Saturday against Little Three rivals Amherst and Wesleyan. Co-captain Kate Whipple ’07 and Ridhima Raina ’07 finished the last home games of their collegiate careers undefeated on the weekend, as the Ephs did not give up a single game, let alone a match, against either team.”
  • “Women’s ice hockey skates by Amherst”
“After a rocky 1-3 start to the season, women’s ice hockey (2-3-1, 2-1-1 in the NESCAC) hit its stride in its home opener, icing rival Amherst 5-2 on Friday. They followed the win with a 2-2 tie against Conn. College the next day.”

25 YEARS AGO … (1992)

  • “Season ends on high note with two wins”
“An old theatre adage states that one should always leave the audience wanting more. This week, the women’s basketball team bid adieu to its season in grand style, leaving the Chandler faithful wanting more. After an astonishingly easy victory against Union in Schenectady on Tuesday, the Ephwomen vanquished the despised Lady Jeffs before a screaming throng on Saturday. The Ephs closed out their season above .500, with a 12-11 mark.”
  • “Cardinals plucked in Little Three win”
“Dick Quinn, breathe a sigh of relief. The string of consecutive winning seasons by Williams varsity teams was extended (at least until the end of the men’s hockey and women’s basketball seasons) Saturday, as the Williams wrestling team came up with a crucial 25-14 win over Wesleyan. When the two vans of Williams wrestlers left the Purple Valley in the birthing hours of Saturday morn, the team’s record was a purgatorial 6-6-1. The pilgrimage ended with a blessing, as the team captured not only the Little Three title, but its third winning season in a row — a feat that had not been accomplished since 1959.”
  • “Eph tidal wave sweeps New Englands”
“Following a season of undefeated dual meets, the women’s swim team was at Bowdoin College from Feb. 28 to March 1 to do it to ‘em one more time. Despite the team’s unblemished record, many of the Ephwomen had not been satisfied with their personal performances during the season. Therefore, the team was almost as surprised by their outstanding performances at New Englands as their competitors were. By the end of the meet, the Williams women had scored 1,1481 points, 350 jumbo points over second place Tufts.”
  • “Racers take fifth at home carnival”
“The Williams ski team played host to a bevy of New England colleges this past weekend in the annual Winter Carnival ski races held at Brodie and Prospect Mountains. Both the men’s and women’s teams put in solid efforts, with each capturing fifth place. The highlight of the two-day racing competition came on Friday, when David Kong ’94 cruised to victory in the men’s giant slalom. His time of 1:44:45 was nearly two seconds faster than that of his closest competitor. Joeld Furey ’94 also had an impressive couple of runs, and as a result, laid claim to 15th place.”
  • “Ephs take ECAC championship over favored SUNY-Stony Brook with characteristic depth”
“Fresh from a win at Division III New Englands two weeks ago, and some strong individual performances last week at the region’s Division I meet, the Williams men’s track team was on a roll. And once something gets rolling, it’s hard to stop, as team Williams proved emphatically this past weekend with a victory over favored SUNY-Stony Brook at the ECAC championships held at Bates.”

50 YEARS AGO … (1966)

  • “Olmsted’s ‘Hat Trick’ Paces Smashing Colby Upset, 9-3”
“An inspired Williams hockey team stunned previously-undefeated Colby with a 9-3 upset romp Friday night. Led by John Olmsted’s ’67 ‘hat trick’ and Jon Stableford’s ’67 sensational work in the goal, the Ephmen were never behind and finished the game with a five-goal blitz.”
  • “Cagers Top Amherst (Yawn): Hot Healy Leader In Victory”
“Whatever notions the Amherst basketball team might have had about upsetting Williams quickly vanished Saturday night as the Eph cagers crushed the visiting Jeff quintet 71 to 49. Well on their way to their eighth straight Little Three title, coach Shaw’s five broke the game open in the second quarter to notch their 17th consecutive win over the Sabrinas.”
  • “Squashmen Cop Sixth In Nationals”
“The Williams squash team traveled to the nationals at Wesleyan this past weekend and finished in a tie for sixth place, with Princeton by accumulating 10 points.”
  • “Rikert Second In Ski Nationals”
“Ski team captain Dave Rikert ’67 finished second in the NCAA ski-meister competition last weekend at Mount Sugarloaf, Maine. Norway-born Matz Kenssen of Utah took the national title with 365.2 points. Rikert had 358.6. Charles Guttormsen of the University of Washington was third with 350.1.”
